Woman's Waterpolo Reports
U-Polo vs Sheffield Ladies
Sunday 6th March 2010

On 6th March Lancaster women’s waterpolo team travelled to Sheffield to play them in the north division upolo league. A close match was anticipated after previously playing them in the BUCS league last term, where the final score was 4-2 to Lancaster. However Lancaster has gelled together a lot more as a team since the prior meeting so we were quietly confident we were in with a good chance of winning.

Disaster struck on the journey with five of the team members (including the goalkeeper, Liz Foster) getting lost. Sheffield was understanding towards this and delayed the start for as long as possible. But due to pool time restrictions we had to start with Heather Clarke in goal. Luckily thanks to on-the-move change by Liz, she only missed a few minutes of the first quarter which saw a great opening goal by Gemma Albrighton. The rest of the team soon followed suit and soon Lancaster were in full swing. Lancaster dominated the game, even in a much smaller pool than the team are used to, which meant well practiced positions had to be restructured. Sheffield was no match and goal after goal kept coming – with a great shot from halfway by Becky Gannon at one point. When Sheffield did manage to attack, Lancaster’s defence was strong and nothing got past Liz! Newcomer Simone Anderson made her mark with some great defending and a couple of equally good goals.

The final score was a well deserved 11-0 to Lancaster, with additional goals being scored by Suzi Kern, Heather Clarke and Ali Corkill. Well done team!

BUCS Matches
Sunday 21th Novemeber 2010

The Lancaster University Ladies Water Polo team headed to Liverpool this weekend to compete in their round of the BUCS matches. The afternoon started with a match against Sheffield Hallam, but despite a good team effort and 2 goals for Becky Gannon, Lancaster were narrowly defeated. As the afternoon went on the team was constantly improving, with impressive goals seen by a number of our girls and great team spirits shown by players in the pool and on the bench alike. There were some close matches, with Lancaster being defeated by just 2 goals against Liverpool University. Nonetheless, the day finished well, beating Sheffield University by 4-1, with 2 great goals from captain Ali Corkill. It was a great day, with good team and personal performances. The girls can now build on these performances and use the experience to prepare for their upcoming matches in the UPOLO league. Good efforts by all players, and a massive well done to the new players who competed in their first matches!
